Work Permits
A Canadian work permit opens doors to incredible employment opportunities and can even be a pathway to permanent residency. However, navigating the process can be challenging, and the risk of falling prey to scams or making mistakes that could disqualify you is real. That’s where Visa Partners comes in. There are several types of work permits available to foreign workers looking to contribute to Canada’s economy. Here are the most common categories:
1. Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)
- Employers must first obtain a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to temporarily fill positions with skills that are in short supply in Canada. After the LMIA is approved by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the foreign worker can apply for a work permit.
International Mobility Program (IMP)
- Certain work permits under the IMP do not require an LMIA. These include:
- Work permits under international agreements like the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and other Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
- Provincial Nominee Work Permits (WPs).
- Work permits for those applying for permanent residency within Canada.
- Work permits issued for humanitarian reasons.
Our Comprehensive Process
Navigating the work permit application process involves several key steps, and Visa Partners is here to assist at every stage:
LMIA-Based Work Permits:
For most Canadian work permits, a positive LMIA is required. This document, issued by ESDC, demonstrates that there is a need for a foreign worker because no Canadian citizens or permanent residents are available. We assist employers in obtaining an LMIA and workers in applying for the associated work permit.
Global Talent Stream (GTS) LMIA:
This program is designed for employers looking to hire highly-skilled global talent and offers a streamlined process. GTS is part of Canada’s Innovation and Skills Plan, making it easier for top-tier professionals to work in Canada.
Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP):
If you’re already in Canada and your current work permit is about to expire, you may be eligible for a BOWP. This permit allows you to continue working while your application for permanent residence is being processed.
Intra-Company Transfers (ICT):
If your company has a branch or affiliate in Canada, you may qualify for an LMIA-exempt work permit through an intra-company transfer. This option is available for employees with specialized knowledge or executive roles.
International Experience Canada (IEC):
For young adults between 18 and 35, the IEC program offers opportunities to work and travel in Canada. Categories include Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op internships.
